+ Eligibility & Qualification

Who can compete in the State Games of America? All California and Nevada residents are eligible to compete like any other California State Games. They do not need to qualify. Other out of state athletes must place in the top three of their event in their State Games. For more info, please see our Eligibility Page or Overview Page.

If I medaled in a previous State Games of America, am I eligible to compete in the 2024 State Games of America? Yes, all past State Games of America medal winners are eligible to compete in the 2024 State Games of America given they participate in their state games between July 1, 2022 - July 1, 2024.

If I qualified in my local State Games but moved to a different state, do I need to re-qualify in the state I moved to? No, you will not need to re-qualify.

Is there a time frame in which I need to qualify for the 2024 State Games of America?

  • 2022 (after July 1): All gold, silver and bronze medalists qualify from National Congress of State Games (NCSG) Member State programs, both Winter and Summer. Any medalist from the 2022 SGA held in Ames, Iowa qualifies.

  • 2023: All gold, silver, and bronze medalists qualify from NCSG Member State programs, both Winter and Summer.

  • 2024 (before July 1): All gold, silver, and bronze medalists qualify from NCSG Member State programs, both Winter and Summer.

  • Any medalists from the 2022 State Games of America is eligible to compete in 2024.

Are Senior Games programs considered a qualifier for the State Games of America? No, some Senior Games are not members of the National Congress of State Games. Only NCSG programs are qualifiers for the State Games of America. (Exemption: New Jersey Senior Games).

+ Registration

Will I receive a formal invitation to compete in the State Games of America? There is no formal invitation to compete.

When and where can I register for the State Games of America? Registration for all sports will be open by January 1, 2024. Athletes/teams must be registered by July 1, 2024. Registration will be available on each individual sports web page.

Will there be on-site registration for the State Games of America? No - all registration is done online before the event.

+ Sports

If I qualified for an event within a particular sport, am I eligible to compete in any other events within said sport? Yes, one can enter as many events within the sports discipline as they would like or is allowed by the sport. For example, if an athlete only medaled in the 100 M Track and Field event, the athlete would also be eligible to compete in any other Track and Field event(s).

What portion of my team competing at the State Games of America needs to be from the qualifying team/relay/pair? The team must be made up of at least 50% of the qualifying team/relay/pair.

Where can I find what age groups/divisions will be offered for my sport? These sport pages are continuously being updated with the most current information.

How do I determine what level I will compete at in the State Games of America? Athletes will compete in the State Games of America at their current level, not necessarily the level in which they qualified for. For example, if an athlete competed at the beginner level to qualify and is now currently competing at the intermediate level, the athlete will compete at the intermediate level at State Games of America.

+ Opening Ceremony

Do athletes need to purchase an Opening Ceremony Ticket? Athletes that participate in the Parade of Athletes do not have to purchase a ticket.

Do coaches need to purchase an Opening Ceremony Ticket? Up to 2 Coaches of Team Sports may march in the Parade of Athletes with their team.

I am a coach/parent/guardian. Can I walk with my athlete(s) in the Parade of Athletes? Yes, but only two coaches per team are allowed in the Parade. If a parent has a young child and is uncomfortable leaving them alone in the Parade, they may Volunteer and walk alongside their child.

+ California Residents

If I’m from California, do I automatically qualify to compete at State Games of America? Yes. Californians do not need to medal to qualify.

Will there be a California State Games in the Summer of 2024 in addition to the State Games of America? No, the State Games of America will replace the California State Games in 2024.
